Caitlin's Story

Last year, a number of Catholic Colleges in the Chatswood parish community were involved in a combined Alpha. Students were invited to reflect on their experience of Alpha, and provided some heartwarming testimonies. Here is one from Caitlin, a student of Mercy College...

Alpha has been an extraordinary experience for me and the other participants in the group who were from Mercy College, St Pius and Chatswood High. Alpha has been a place where we have been able to talk and discuss our points of view on our faith, and explore global issues in a Catholic context.

Each week, we began by sharing a meal as a symbol of our community, just like Jesus and his disciples who often shared meals together. This gave us all a chance to get to know one another better, and to form new relationships between year groups and students from other schools.

The weekly video contained messages about Jesus’ life, we discussed some of life’s great questions, such as, if you could ask Jesus one thing, what would it be?  How can we resist evil? And are Jesus’ messages still relevant in today’s society? All of these questions have opened my eyes to the role of Catholicism in my life. Each week, I have received messages which have helped me in my life to strive to be more like Jesus.

Alpha has helped me enrich my faith and explore questions, it has helped me to better understand and affirm what I believe. It has provided me with the opportunity to share and talk about my faith with other people. Alpha has given me the gift of understanding Christ in my life and in the world, it has helped me develop my faith by looking at my religion from a different perspective; which is, by asking questions and forming my own opinion instead of preaching.

In the world today, people need Christ in their lives more than ever before. Being Catholic is all about accepting Christ and letting him guide us as well as having faith in God and his plan for us. God wants good things for us, he has come so that we may have life and live it to the fullest; a life where our sins are forgiven, where we are guided by God and where our life is filled with happiness, love and relationships. All we need to do is ask and we shall receive God in our lives.

In this way, Alpha has taught me many messages and lessons, which has changed me, and the people around me. I have found Alpha a great and extremely rewarding experience, which I would recommend to everyone.
