In the lead up to the Alpha Easter Invitation, make sure you have the right team. This is a key element in facilitating an effective Alpha. Here are a few ideas to help you select and build a great Alpha team.
Each of your team members needs to be able to relate well to non-Christians. Good team members know how to help others relax and in a natural and non invasive way, encourage people to participate. This is because often guests who come on Alpha can be nervous and apprehensive, and may have preconceptions of Christians that are not very complimentary. So your team members have to be able to put the guests at ease and be able to break down any barriers quickly, but in a warm and engaging way.
A good way of selecting team members from your congregation is to find those who are naturally good with people, both strangers and friends. They would be the type of person you would be comfortable to introduce to a close friend of yours who is not a Christian. Easy to speak to and are always encouraging, they can often gather people with ease and you normally feel glad you have spent time with them.
This is particularly true for the role of the Hosts (the small group leaders). You need Hosts that are positive, outgoing and encouraging. One way to make sure your team members can do this is to avoid choosing people who you consider to be religious or judgmental. The dynamic of Alpha is to allow guests to share their ideas, even if they are different from Christian beliefs. We allow them to do this without being corrected or making them feel like they are being judged. The whole team has to have the right attitude. This includes Hosts, Helpers, the Course Leader, your Task Force and your Worship Leader.
We encourage you to download the Administrator's Handbook for more information. It is a detailed resource that helps you facilitate Alpha week by week. You will find it in the ‘Run’ section of our website and can be accessed by using your login here (http://australia.alpha.org/runresource).
Remember to register your Alpha here
once you have set your dates
Your Alpha will then appear on our
"Alpha Finder" map so potential
guests can find it using their postcode.
